Chatham Island in Andaman Islands
Chatham Island is part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands union territory, located just 5 km from Port Blair city center, connected by a bridge over the seawater.

The island’s history dates back to its first colony established on 12 acres of land. In 1857, “The Andaman Committee,” under Dr. Frederic John Mouat, was formed to find the most suitable location for a penal settlement. On January 22, 1858, Captain H Man raised the Union Jack at Port Blair to establish and manage the penal system.

In the spring of 1858, the British government established a penal settlement in South Andaman, at the same harbor (Chatham), where the first colony had stood nearly a century earlier.
