Long Island in the Andaman Islands
Long Island is part of the Andaman archipelago and falls under the North and Middle Andaman administrative district in the Indian Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Located approximately 80 km (50 miles) north of Port Blair, it lies just 47 nautical miles away by sea and spans an area of about 18 square kilometers.
Despite its modest size, Long Island is a well-developed village with a population of around 2,000. It boasts several modern amenities that are rarely found in other Bay Island settlements. The island is equipped with its own power station, a state-of-the-art boat building yard, a senior secondary school, a bank, communication facilities, a hospital, a forest range office, and a police outpost—making it a unique and self-sufficient community. Remarkably, Long Island functions entirely without a traditional road network.
Instead, a narrow four-foot-wide concrete path links the various sections of the Panchayat area, starting from the main jetty. The route, shaded by Casuarina trees, provides a serene walkway leading to the government school and police station. Residents traverse these pathways daily to reach workplaces, schools, temples, and administrative offices.

-Sightseeings -
Lalaji Bay
Located on the western shore of Long Island, Lalaji Bay is a stunning, sandy beach offering tranquility and natural beauty. To reach this peaceful spot, one must board a fiber boat from the Long Island jetty. The ride itself is a captivating journey across open waters, flanked by mesmerizing mangrove-lined creeks. The path to the bay is a visual treat, making the voyage as memorable as the destination.
The beach boasts soft white sand and clear, inviting waters—ideal for unwinding. Whether you’re sunbathing on the shore or taking a refreshing dip, Lalaji Bay offers a serene escape that soothes the mind, body, and spirit.
Guitar Island
Situated near Long Island, Guitar Island is a unique destination with a shape that loosely resembles a guitar. Contrary to some misleading, digitally altered images that show a guitar-shaped island with a central hole (mimicking a soundhole), the actual charm of Guitar Island lies in its natural configuration.
The island gets its name from its outline formed by two landmasses: the main Guitar Island (resembling the guitar’s body) and the smaller adjacent island (shaped like a headstock). These two are connected by a narrow sandbar that resembles the guitar’s neck or fretboard, giving the combined landform its distinctive “guitar-like” appearance.
Merk Bay Beach
Merk Bay is a hidden gem located on North Passage Island, not far from Long Island. Accessible only by boat, the beach is near Strait Island, which is home to the indigenous Onge tribe. One side of North Passage Island is densely cloaked in mangrove forest, offering a secluded and raw natural landscape.
The boat docks near a rustic wooden jetty, from where visitors embark on a scenic walk through the mangroves to reach Merk Bay. The beach that awaits is breathtaking—featuring powdery white sands and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. It’s a haven for underwater enthusiasts and those seeking peace in a pristine environment.
